A Small Wonder for Economic Development in Clinton

An alert reader sends this bit of harrowing news from the County Seat, Clinton, Illinois.

Leaf burning extinguished in Clinton after vote to ban

snuffing out one of the higher minded pursuits in our southern neighbor. Their is not a dry eye in the comments section of the Pantagraph, some holding out for the glory days of burning garbage in the city. We also have Clinton looking for business development, going from a bartending university to a burial site for toxics as drivers for the local economy.

A high minded reader of Wapella.com suggested the Maroons take a tip from the video archicve and developing

"a robot to pick up leaves - call it a robotic vacuum - sounds a little fishy to me, but it just might put Clinton on the map. Perhaps the robot could be modelled after Vicki, that robotic toddler who captured all of our hearts in Small Wonder, the ground breaking show about robot technology"

Here is a clip from Small Wonder, to refresh your memory. Could we enlist Dick Williams and Billy Toohill to come up with a Robotic Maroon Vacuum to pick up leaves?

Back on topic please

The topic is Robots. Can a Robot be trained to vacuum up leaves in Maroonville? It seems likely, and it could be dressed like Vicki in Small Wonder.

Please leave the politicking to the print newspapers, and more high minded blogs. We may open a separate goon room section so those that missed out on 1980's sitcoms can gnash their teeth in private when the county seat is mentioned.

I once met a man who was smoking in a bar while talking about his gun collection on a cell phone. You mean to tell me he's not welcome in Clinton anymore? What is up with that video?

This site is getting dangerously close to Pantagraph comment page territory.

That said, I think the Small Wonder YouTube is a first rate addition to the leaf burning controversy. I can remember the old days after burning the trash in our back yard (which sent up a trail of black soot to be seen for miles, and exploding a few aerosol cans) sitting down to enjoy the smell while watching my favorite afternoon shows such as Small Wonder.

If you knew your Wapella town ordinances Mr. Moderator, you would know that Dick Williams was "hereby banned from all robot-making or robot-making related activities". There may be some loopholes. bbd

ignorance is bliss

How about some youtube video of Charles in Charge with the great Willie Ames in the mix. Now that is classic tv

where would we be if the pioneers were told they would be fined for burning leaves.just food for thought.

Hopefully, Clinton's leaf-burning ban is the result of them wanting to cut down on the "public nuisance" of such activities, and not a response to the massive hoax known as "global warming."

people wake up they're coming for you, you'll have a number on your head before you know what hit you!

Let's clean the language up here folks... jeeeeesh!

tisk tisk the next thing you know you'll be getting your hand slapped for using vulgar language. sorry it happened, but could'nt someone have died of sitting in a bar for fifty years smelling second hand smoke. where's the justice?

Mr. Mod--this is turning even more into the Pantagraph comments section. I encourage more moderation.

Mr. Profanity, if you ever defame the Holy Father like that again I will personally open a can of whoop on you.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Clinton has been going round and round on leaf burning since there were trees. This debate has raged forever. A haze has hung in the air in Goon City since I was a lad in the 1960s. Every year it is a hot topic, every year there is more inane discussion.

Bag 'em, mulch 'em, shred 'em...do something. The city fathers surely can come up with some sort of environmentally appropriate resolution. Maybe advanced mixology licensing should be tabled.

SoCal, since you live in the heart of internal combustion darkness I thought you might be a little more enlightened. Mass transit and fuel efficiency sure can't hurt, unless you are in Detroit or one of the Seven Sisters, or what is left of that family.

Apparently, there was some sort of vulgar response to my post about "global warming." I didn't see it, nor do I care to know what ignorance was on display by such vulgarity.

As far as my being "enlightened" on the subject...I am not anti-environmental protection by any means. Perhaps one of my more "enlightened" friends here might reveal to me how human activity is more significant than our God and Creator's cyclical climate changes that have been in existence since the universe began by answering this simple question:

What human activity ended the last Ice Age?

SC,

I think the proper advice is "please don't feed the trolls". They just get hungrier the more they eat.

Now, back to the robots...Why exactly was Dick Williams prohibited from manufacturing a robot within village boundaries?

S. Cal,

Good point. But, to the main point, do you think Vicki the robot could help with raking leaves?

Who would have thought thay Vicki the robot would have caused such a stir on W.com. Maybe we should post some youtube clips of ALF, Magnum P.I., Simon & Simon, The Fall Guy, Riptide, Falcon Crest, or any other 80 classic that comes to mind. Also Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth should be brought into the Clinton leaf burning discussion. Not only do the fine citizens worry about a nuclear( or as George W. likes to pronounce it NUCULAR) reactor in Dewitt county, the leaf discussion creates a whole new turmoil. Thank goodness for 61777!

Isn't it about time for Alf to make a comeback?

IRBW,

Going with don't feed the trolls as the theme of the day.

Wapella.com may have to enable the goonblock on this blog.

Mod,
This is what happens with posts that can stir controversy. I am all for the "not feeding the trolls" but don't you think the title of your headline "A Small Wonder for Economic Development in Clinton" draws the wrong attention and feedback from the start? I agree with HoosierGato that this resembles Pantagraph comment page territory. That is what the internet has created.

Where is EEP at to give this sinking post a fine closure? How about bringing back the conversation of the Tweed film festival? It could only help.

Proud of this site and proud to be born and raised in Hog City. Others just don't get it.

EEP is representing Hog City down in the Wonderful World of Disney in Orlando this week.

IRBW - amen regarding your Vickie post. I've always thought that Vickie brought people together and look what happened. Robots have always been controversial in hog city. Maybe only the oppossum can save us. bbd
