Kennedy Center Honors George Jones, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend

After a 4 year campaign Wapella.com has succeeded in its quest to have 3 entertainment greats honored by the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. George (defying the moniker No-Show) Jones, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey were honored for their extraordinary genius and tenacity, the 2008 Honorees have redefined the way we see, hear and feel the performing arts. We will forever be thankful for the great gifts they have shared with us," said Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen A. Schwarzman.

Per the Kennedy Center

"With his unique voice and extraordinary career endurance, singer George Jones has been instrumental in making country music a vital force in American life. As the heart and soul of the seminal band The Who, songwriters and singers Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey transformed the sights and sounds of rock and roll."

Past honorees, including Clint Eastwood, Elton John and Sidney Poitier, made nominations for the awards, along with members of the Kennedy Center's national artists committee, including Glenn Close and Reba McEntire.

Great Choices and a round of applause from Hog City for the 3 music greats and the other inductees.

Is w.com narrowing its arts vision to pop music? Who in Wapella has not been delighted with the performances of the other 2008 Kennedy Center inductees? I for one will always appreciate Barbara Streidsand's Tin Pan Alley(+) vocal talents and light comedic acting skills. Morgan Freeman touched my heart in "Driving Miss Daisy." And the dance? Who better to embody the Wapella hoofers' aspirations than Ms. Twyla Tharp!

Wapella.com and the Board of Wapella Historians actively campaigned for the Ol' Possum the two guys from Sheperds Bush.

The campaign for Freeman, Tharp and Streisand was waged via less Hog City focussed websites.

Alas our campaigns for Jim Hagar and Jerry Reed were too late to get them the recognition they so richly deserved, but they remain forever in our memory here at Wapella.

HG, Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors of all time. :-)

I'm just back from spending last week freezing my ham-hocks off in Hog City. I had a wonderful time visiting with family and friends, eating at Sorrento's and The Shack, etc., but I'm happy to be back in the balmy SoCal weather. I just can't "do" those Midwest winters anymore!! :-(

Babs S's acting skills are "light" at best.

Suggest Chieftains' Christmas music for musical and spiritual stimulation. Maybe a little J. Taylor as well.

Can W.com ban references to musicals?

"What's Up Doc" with Ryan O'Neil had some nice screwball comedy moments for Babs--kind of a throwback to Grant/Hepburn in "Bringing Up Baby."

BEP is right again: Chieftains + Elvis Costello = St. Stephens Day Murders! Great!

Also try:

Kinks "Father Christmas"
Slade "Merry XMas Everybody"
Wizzard "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day"
Pogues "Fairytale of New York"
Ramones "Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight)"
The Vandals "Oi! to the World" and on and on and on!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Looks like Mel McDaniel didn't make it again this year....

For Christmas music, check out The Jethro Tull Christmas Album. It has mostly original songs of the non-saccharine variety, and its arrangements of traditional Christmas tunes are unusual and interesting. It's a welcome antidote to the rumpapumpum of Little Drummer Boy and the other overplayed songs of the season.

Of course, the Jingle Dogs barking Jingle Bells is always an option, and it's a good way to scare off burglars (though it might also repel Santa himself, who is rumored to be a traditionalist in most respects).
