Roger Says: Identify Local Celebrities

Tip of the Hat to Wapella Great Tim Mollet, WHS '87 who provided this archival shot of Wapella style marketing circa 1980 or so. But Tim asks a great question...who are these two Irish Circle Spokesmodels? I really can't tell, but will add what clues I have

1) RT 51 is 2 lane and dangerously close to the Green Ring in this photo. There is no drainage ditch between the bar and the road, so this must be pre-1985

2) The guy on the Left looks quite a bit like Keith "Mex" Hernandez, which was a popular look in those days. He is wearing a what looks to be a Suzuki hat, indicating his cycling preference.

3) The guy on the right is wearing the official ceremonial uniform of Wapella. There is no greater garb than the matching PBR Shirt and Hat, with shorts that would be considered obscene in most family settings. If the man is standing in a hole, it could be "Uncle" Steve Morris, though it is a rare picture where Steve is not the largest man in the tavern parking lot.

The "come-on" text is a classic. Who would pass something like this up? Who are these guys...and Who is Roger?

Update! A Mysterious Caller just called chanting the following phrase "How Dry it Was. You must never forget, Waynesville, never forget" Eerie, but perhaps a clue to the identity of the tavern models.

Another Update! In response to JMK observation that "The more I look at that picture, the more I see Bishop and Ladew"...keep this old image of Abe Lincoln in mind. The more you look at any picture, the more you see Bill Ladew

this is unbelievable - Tim Mollet is a star for finding this gem

I would like to enter my guess as Bob Bishop on the left and Bill LaDew on the right. My second guess would be David Bowman on the left and Paul Nolan on the right with the predominate mustaches and manly physiques.

Guy on the left is cousin Paul Schmid ,on the right is either Kent Holt or Lee Holt RJT

Forget the previous post. I Was wrong. Left is Lynn Holt. Right guy is Kent Holt. And the mod is correct this photo was about 1983 because of drought conditions/no 4 lane road. RJT

I don't believe that is Lyn or Kent Holt.

I'm gonna go with Millz on this one.. The more I look at that picture, the more I see Bishop and Ladew.

1. Tim Mollet is a star regardless of him finding this photo or not

2. Left is Tom Selleck, right is a young Wilford Brimley. Both in town shortly after Tony Dow raved about Hog City in many Hollywood trades.

OT: Moderator asked me on a previous thread if I was a part of the '79 Lady Wildcats team. No, but I was at the game. Don't remember much about it, but I do remember the Lady Maroon name of "Sas" Spencer. It was in the Journal every day back in those days... Wow, I feel old.

Could it be Paul Schmid on the left and Jeff Finger on the right?
Wasn't 1983 the PIC year?

Whatever the case, Superstar Tim Mollet gets kudos.

Rodger Bernius on the left and Steve Morris on the right is my guess.

I believe the one on the left is Marty Schmid. The one on the right is Kenny Morris.

SusieSchaefer said...

Upon further investigation, it is not Marty or Kenny. The guy on the left I am told is Roger. Roger was married to Linda Burris. (Bob and Betty's daughter) Roger ran the Circle briefly. As for the other guy, I am still searching, but will report back soon on my findings.

SusieSchaefer said...

I have been informed and assured that the short man on the right is indeed our very own Steve Morris. He is merely standing in a ditch.

Roger Bernius worked at Portec with Steve and was never married to Linda or ran the Irish Circle.

Roger Bernius on the Right and I just talked to the Guy on the Left from Mexico Wapella's very own Admiral Steve Morris Between the two of them they have drank enough PBR's in a lifetime to own the circle three times over.

Linda was married to a man named Scott. Not a Roger.

You have your right and left mixed up, but the names are correct.

I suppose at best, there are traits of both Ladew and Bishop there..heck, I dont have any idea really... I would have never thought either one of them if Millz hadnt come forth with the info....

I'm sticking to my guns- Lyn Holt left, Kent Holt right. RJT

Tough one - I took this back to the lab and ran some profiling programs. The programs are indicating the great Steve Morris on the right & the man on the left by process of elimination can only be Robert Wadlow of Alton IL. The mod is going to run down to HC & get a genetic sample from Steve - it's the only way we'll be able to confirm. bbd

Unca Steve fits the profile. Blue Ribbon Hat and shirt combo. It would seem that it is definitely Steve on the right, and fact that the pose is in front of the sign which says "Roger" would lead one to believe the guy on the left is Roger something. Bernius is the consensus so I'll roll with that.

Click on the picture to enlarge it - it is Uncle Steve.

Is this evidence of why PBR's popularity waned for so many years? I doubt Madison Avenue was involved in this brilliant advertising campaign. BEP

I stand corrected, It is Roger from Portec/Thrall and Steve Morris on the right. I didn't click on the picture for clarity until now. Big question is, where can one find Blue Ribbon attire like that. It should command a premium. RJT

Oh and by the way EEP, October was a short month for the Cubbies. Cherokee said today to watch out for tires on the road as the wheels on their bus would fall off. RJT

Painful as it is, you speak the truth RJT. I had a couple pops tonight with LP Toohill (as classy a STL fan as there ever was) down at HQ, He was rooting for The Cubs, even though they were down in the game 2-0, as well as 2-0 in the series. I appreciated the moral support.

We may as well have sent White's Repair to the play-offs. At least Ramirez went 0-12 or was it 0-13?

you know it is going bad when Augie Oheda has an impact against his former team. Oh well, the Central doesn't look much promising for next year either with bunch of bad .500 teams and Cardinal ownership reverting back to its pre-LaRussa years (1990-95) of bad baseball.

Anonymous said...

definitely Roger Bernius and Steve Morris

Anonymous said...

The year was 1984, Leo and Mary Lou Mollet the owners. Steve Morris and Roger Bernius. Drinking buddies then and now.

Well, it looks like I'm late on this one. But now that I know I can enlarge the picture, I am saying it's Roger and Steve. Didn't Wapella suffer a shortage of PBR back in '83? ;)
