Wapella Gardeners Rule!

While the world has had two (maybe three) famous gardeners - Chance (pictured above) and Groundskeeper Willie (not pictured) both come to mind, Wapella lists numerous legendary Gardeners among it's residents, and now, to add to this distinguished list, comes this announcement:

"Springtime is just around the corner and it's time to start thinking about the Wapella Park's gardens. The Wapella Garden Club would like to tell you about several new projects in the works and a few you might have missed.

A new addition to the park is the CHARLES SCHETTLER MEMORIAL which was donated by alumni. Mr Schettler, a longtime agriculture teacher at WHS, was a major supporter of the FFA. This year the garden club plans to do plantings around the memorial. Also in the works for later this spring is a ceremony remembering Mr. Schettler and his dedication to WHS and the agricultural community. More details on this as plans develop.

Also new to the park is the addition of the butterfly garden. This garden became a project of the park due to the push to save the Monarchs who are losing their natural habitats.

The JACKIE STOECKER MEMORIAL statue was placed in the herb garden last year. It was donated by teachers and friends.

The Wapella Garden is once again on the DOVE Garden Walk. The garden walk will be held on Saturday June 27th, from 10am - 3pm, with a tea luncheon from 11-2. Everyone is urged and welcome to attend. The money raised from the event will go to help victims of domestic violence. Bev Leggett and Vicki Holland will have their gardens featured on the garden walk this year. Bev has been reestablishing her landscape after a recent home renovation and Vicki's garden has a new Koi Pond that was installed by Green View. Green View planned and designed all the gardens in the park, including the project for next year, the Rose Garden around the gazebo.

With all the work to be done in the park, the Wapella Garden Club is always looking for members and volunteers. If interested, please contact Chairman Vicki Holland at 217-935-3537, Co-Chairman Bev Leggett at leggett7@verizon.net, or Secretary Elizabeth Weikle at lilabeth81@verizon.net.

Thanks!"

There are no gardeners in Wapella who can measure up with the original Gardeners, JB and Peggy.

They were the greatest.

Right, which is who "Wapella's legendary Gardners" refers to good sir or madam.

Hat's off to Vicki and others for the beautification effort(s).

Hat's off to the mod for holding back and not mentioning "herb" gardens and others such sophomoric references. I know it was hard to do, but you did it.

As a former potato gardener in Wapella, I am glad the dream is alive.

Mr. Mod, in an otherwise outstanding post, you might want to fix the cinematic reference to one "Chauncey Gardner."

And has a transformation taken place?

KC, though we openly invite criticism/corrections on our site, I must submit this to you:

Chance (Sellers) is a middle-aged man who lives in the townhouse of a wealthy man in Washington D.C. Chance seems very simple-minded and has lived in the house his whole life, tending the garden, with virtually no contact with the outside world. His cultural and social education is derived entirely from what he watches on the television sets provided by the "Old Man", who raised him....Rand's wife Eve (MacLaine) invites Chance to their home (the famous Biltmore Estate doubles as the Rand Estate) to recover from his injured leg. After being offered alcohol for the first time in his life, Chance coughs over it while being asked his name which, instead of "Chance the Gardener" (which is what he said), is interpreted to be "Chauncey Gardiner".

Wapella.com says: too easy, NEXT!

EEP,

First my apologies on a name mixup. The Chance->Chauncey comment was from me, HoosierGato, not KCat->BCat. I was making a comment on the "new" BadgerCat and forgot to sign!

Second, I have not seen "Being There" for some time and defer to your cinematic wisdom!

Apologies for the mix-up on my side as well.

BadgerCat has a nice ring to it, though.

is the park now a cemetery

If Wapella Park is a thought of as a cemetery then I suppose it could be called a cemetery of memories – good and bad, funny and sad, or many just downright hysterical. After all, it was the location of the Wapella High School for the better part of a century. We can only imagine the stories that special piece of land could tell us. Wouldn’t we all want to sit and listen or perhaps tell a few stories of our own?

Guess what? Wapella Park is a park. We can sit and listen. We can walk, run, skate, play tennis, basketball, or baseball, enjoy a picnic, tell stories and let our children play on the playground. We can also admire the beautiful gardens. There are over ninety trees. Many were planted in loving memory of family members and friends. There are also two very special memorials placed tastefully in the gardens.

I believe the Wapella Park is full of life and memories. I am quite sure I would not classify it as a cemetery. To call the park a cemetery just seems a little hurtful to the people taking the time to honor the memories of family, friends and teachers who were cherished and loved. Keep up the good work and enjoy the park.

But the cemeteries in Wapella are quite lively and pleasant on any given day. No harm in that.
